EGD is an endoscopic procedure which is used to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum ( part of the small intestine) called Upper GI Tract.

EGD is used to evaluate a number of digestive disorders. It is a popular diagnostic option because it is generally well tolerated by most of the patients with minimal discomfort.

Your gastroenterologist may use EGD to evaluate:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Heartburn
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Upper gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Presenting blood in vomiting or black stool
  • Chest pain (without evidence of heart disease)
  • Foreign body ingestion like a coin, battery, etc.

EGD can also be used for the treatment of certain conditions like:

  • Bleeding ulcer
  • Variceal bleeding
  • Dilatation of stricture
  • Putting a stent without operation to improve difficulty in swallowing / Gastrocare Duodenal Obstruction
  • To remove ingested objects (Foreign Body)
  • Remove small tumor through endoscopic surgery
  • To put balloon for treatment of obesity
